How to: Keep your social media safe from hackers

In the digital age with so many businesses getting hooked up and growing online, learning how to keep your social media safe and secure from cyber-criminals is super important.

Protecting your business information and accounts is often the last thing business owners want to worry about. I get it - as business owners we have enough hats to wear without becoming a cyber-security expert as well. However, it's often only after something happens that many business owners start to take cyber-security seriously. Fortunately, there are some really simple steps you can begin to take right now to keep your social media accounts safe and secure:

• Use two-factor authentication to log-in to your accounts
  Two-factor authentication is a two-step verification process to login to your accounts. Usually a code is sent to your phone or email - which you have to enter  before you can login.
  
  
• Use a password manager
  Use a password manager like Last Pass to store all of your passwords. This way they are stored safely and not on your computer or paper.
  
  
• Use difficult to guess passwords and change your passwords regularly
  You know that old password you still use from 10 years ago - yeah not gonna cut it. Neither will simple passwords like 1234 or your dogs name. Choose difficult passwords and change them often - that way hopefully you will already have a new password should a data breach take place.

• Only grant trusted apps access to your account - delete any old apps you are no longer using
  Remember that fun quiz app you installed that told you your personality type? Or your power animal? That could still be sitting there in your installed apps quietly collecting your data. Only ever allow trusted apps access to you social media, delete any old apps which no longer need to be connected to your social media accounts.
  
  
• Make sure to log-out after each session
  ​Never stay logged in on any device, always make sure to log out after each session.
